Reflection: Sex Education
Cedarburg, Wisconsin, was divided on whether to teach sex education in schools, and I was there photographing how the people handled this question in an American small town in 1972. Lots to photograph - hand-painted signs, marches, meetings and debates on both sides - even a preacher from Oklahoma showed up to put in his two cents.
I photographed a Sunday evening youth service in the Lutheran Church but forgot about it until I saw the published spread in Life Magazine. An insightful picture editor fished out this image, and a brilliant caption writer did the rest. That caption which is in the right hand corner of the picture as it appeared in the magazine appears below:
"From the pulpit of the Lutheran Church, which had been divided by his advocacy of sex education in the schools, the Reverend John Sills preaches a sermon on the subject to young people - who make it clear that whatever the controversy, life goes on in Cedarburg."
