Reflection: Gabriel Boric, President of Chile, 2024
In April 2024, I was in Chile to donate photographs, which I had made of President Salvador Allende in 1971 for Life Magazine, to La Biblioteca Nacional de Chile. We met the current president, Gabriel Boric, in La Moneda to view a selection of the photos. When we finished he took me into his office and stood by a large framed photograph and said, "This is why we (meaning his administration) are here."
The photograph in the frame contained 725 faces of "The Disappeared" - representing the over 3500 people who were missing or killed, whose bodies were never found during the genocide of the Pinochet years. I photographed the president several more times during my visit but never with this intensity.
