I was relatively new, and green behind the ears, at Life Magazine in 1970, and I suspected that Director of Photography Dick Pollard would sometimes give me an assignment just to see what I'd do - like this assignment to photograph Candice Bergan for a cover.

LA felt like a foreign country to me, but I knew enough to stay at The Beverly Hills Hotel, easy access to where the stars lived up in the canyons. One morning when I was not scheduled to be anywhere I was by the pool reading a Jacqueline Susann novel and came to a paragraph about someone reading a novel in a pool cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. I had to just stop, put down the paperback, and think about things for a minute.

Another time I surprised Candy one morning when she was on her way to the stables where she kept her horse. She seemed a little put-out, but after some negotiations I got to along. She brought her dog for companionship and when they soon forgot I was around, I photographed this moment between Candice and her horse.
