Reflection: After Work

In 1972 I was doing a story about country music, concentrating on musicians that didn't get paid. Riding around Mountain City, Tennessee, just after dark in early spring I passed an American Service Station that was closed, but the lights were still on and guys were picking and singing in the office. Although I kept looking at the Piper Cub without wings on the lift in the first stall in the garage, there was no way. So I crowded everybody into the tiny office for a group shot. LIFE didn't use the picture, but it came close to what I was looking for - the heart and soul in country music.
